Bari to Palermo, Italy
Transport totals – Around 400km of riding for this part of trip for Beau sans Emm 😓.
Eating our way through Southern Italy 😍🙌 since Emma is broken – very little saddle time and a lot of food time 🚲.
Going with the block mode blogging format I give you a highly summarised account of our time in Sicily.
Day 1: I arrived in Bari and rode to Taranto where I spent the night in an Air Bnb owing to the fact that rain was forecasted and I couldn’t be
bothered pitching a tent 😂. Had another spell of #coldAF rain on ride but luckily only lasted about an hour.
Day 2: I got a train from Taranto to Reggio di Calabria and had to literally beg the conductor to allow me to board as I had a bicycle not in a
box 🙅♂️. From Reggio caught a ferry to Messina and ride South in hunt for a good tent park up. Found it in the way of a super nice Sicilian family (Mauro and Chiara) who not only cooked me a sumptuous dinner but also found a place for me to sleep indoors
at the local games room 🙏.
Day 3: woke and had breaky with Mauro and Chiara which was Graniti (basically sorbet with cream) and a brioche bun 😋. Ride to Catania along the super gorgeous coast (aka the equivalent of the great ocean road for Sicily).
Made Catania in arvo and hung out with Úna our gracious Warm Showers host who is an Irish expat living the dream in Sicily. Had a pretty epic ice cream 🍦 as recommend by Úna.
Beau loves Sicilian coastline VIDEO
Day 4: Emm arrived early and we spent the day cruising around Catania in town and ate pizza (Emma had caught a flight from recovering in Greece and then taken a bus to meet up with me in Catania).
We then spent the evening with Úna and I tried my hand at making pasta Schuto (the dish Mauro had taught me to cook a few nights back near Messina).
We also went out for another epic ice cream 😂.
Day 5: hiked Mt Etna. Epic is an understatement. I’ll let the pics and Vids the talking.
Needless to say at the end of the day we were cooked and the all hd a horse meat dinner with Úna later that night really hit the spot!!
Day 6: I rode to Siracusa whilst Emm caught the local bus. We cruised the small island of Ortigia which was very beautiful. Reminded us of some
seaside towns in the Croatian istrian peninsula. Had some epic pizza calzone for dinner 😍.
Day 7: I rode to Ragusa via Noto and Modica, the latter for a chocolate pick up 😜. Very scenic day and choc calorie induced Coma. Emm caught the train and had 2 train breakdowns and several delays meaning she just beat me there 😂. Lucky for her she had some good fuel for the ride in the form of a sweet ricotta filled Doughnut (a local Sicilian specialty).
Night in Ragusa was cool. The city was for us the most beautiful in Sicily and one of the best we have visited so far. Highly recommend 👍.
Day 8: we both caught train to Canicattì where I then rode to Agrigento whilst emm caught a connecting bus. We walked down to the historic temple area and went out for a surprise wait for it….some more pizza. Seriously can’t get enough of this stuff. Also for lunch we had some arancini balls. Very delicious.
Day 9: we both got train to Palermo and spent the day cruising the city mainly on the food hunt 😂. We got some top arancini balls and had some
seriously good pizza again. No ice cream as it was too cold but we did get on the biscuit and pistachio spread calorie wagon 😩.
Day 10: walked and hitch hiker up to the famous Monreale cathedral. Pretty awe inspiring sites to be held and well worth the hike (almost 40k steps for the day). Found this amazing local breakfast treat called Eres (basically an sweet ricotta filled arancini ball 😍 def one of my top deserts). Went to catch ferry to Naples at night only to find GNV (ferry company) had moved sailing 2 hours early without notifying us😡. Forced to stay another night and miss a day in Naples.
Day 11: cruising around Palermo trying to avoid the occasional deluge of rain. Did make the ferry today and as a reward we had some seriously jacked calzones for dinner and a sweet ricotta doughnut to wash down for good measure. Prob not the best meal for sailing which emm proved by getting sea sickness.
